After it rains my girls and I quite often go down to our backyard and look for mushrooms in our nice green lawn. There’s always a few different types to look at and we love hunting for them and taking photos.
This time however, Miss E had a little ladybug with her from our craft box. She had so much fun balancing the little ladybug on the mushroom tops I couldn’t help but take some videos and photos to share with you all.
Do make sure you read the safety precautions before doing this activity with your own children.

Safety precaution:
Please note that there are poisonous mushrooms. It’s important that your child does not let their head get too close to any mushroom, and children must wash their hands after this activity. If you’d prefer to reduce any risk further, you can use tweezers to balance the ladybug on the mushroom.

How to Balance ladybugs on mushrooms
- You’ll need to wait a couple of days after some good rain. Then, pop outside and hunt for mushrooms.
- If there are mushrooms popping up, go and grab the ladybugs and get your child to balance the little ladybugs on the tops of the mushrooms.
- Each mushroom is different. Some are really sturdy and some very delicate. Your child will need to focus their attention and place the ladybug on the mushroom top depending on each type of mushroom. Â Talk about the structure of a mushroom and discuss why some are stronger than others.Â
- Can’t find mushrooms? Try your nice green lawn or mulched areas, or take a walk in a rainforest.
