Gumnuts are perfect for nature crafts. We’ve used them as paint stampers, in colour and shape play, made bracelets and even as an ingredient for mud stew. This time we’ve made gumnuts planter pots and they are exquisite. Here’s how we made ours.
What you need
- gumnuts, the bigger the better
- moss or a small plant)
- small gravel
- charcoal
- soil
- nail file
- shot glass or a glass cup that will fit over the gumnut
- skewerÂ
How to make a gumnut planter pots
I made these gumnut planters using a similar process to making a terrarium.
- Using the nail file, shave down the bottom of the gumnut to make it flat and even. You want it to be flat so that it will sit upright on a table.Â
- Bang the gumnut on a table to clear out any loose seeds and debris inside the gumnut hole.
- Place the gravel in the hole of the gumnut first, then sprinkle a bit of charcoal on top of the gravel.
- Next, add the soil but leave a small gap between the soil and top of the gumnut.
- Use the skewer to add the moss to the top of the soil and secure it into the gumnut.
- Water it and then place the glass cup over the top.Â
- Water it daily to keep it green and lush.
These mossy gumnut planter pots are perfect for your work office or somewhere in the house that you hover around daily.
Be sure to spray with with a little bit of water each day to keep the moss green and lovely. The kids love gently picking it up in their hand and watering it each day. They’re very font of out mossy planter pots and so am I. They bring me a little extra joy each time I look at them.
