I’ve been enviously fixated on winter instagram images on that contain snow. I’ve devoured the stunning snow capped mountains,  longed to walk down those snow littered pathways and felt joy at the images of children with snow laced into their homemade gloves.
I’ve never experienced a white Christmas. In fact, I’ve seen snow only once in my life and it was a very long time ago. My children have never even seen snow. Every year, in Australia, we have blistering summer heat. A white Christmas is certainly something I long for when I’m sweating it out on Christmas day.
I wondered if there was a way we could create a pretend snow fight activity at home. Playing with ice seems like the logical solution but honestly, in this heat, the ice would melt in two minutes. Â Instead of a snow fight, it would become an ice cold, soggy mud and grass fight. Fun, but still, I can have a mud fight in any season!
Then my mind struck a great idea. Popcorn! It’s white, it’s light and if I put it in the freezer it would be slightly chilled too.
Make popcorn snow!Â
I bought a packet of popping corn for $1.60 at the shops and I couldn’t wait to get started. An easy way to make popcorn, is to put the popping corn in a brown paper bag and cook it in the microwave for 1 minute and 20 seconds (times may vary depending on your microwave). I popped a lot of popping corn in brown paper bags that day!
We ended up with four big bowls of popcorn and I could only fit one bowl in the freezer. So when I pulled that one out,  I took it outside and  tipped the contents down the back of the girl’s shirts. They loved it!
It didn’t take long for a snow fight to begin. Â There were giggles and screams of delight as they took up handfuls of popcorn and threw it at each other. Popcorn was flying everywhere, especially on me. I almost forgot to take photos!
There was snow popcorn in hair, popcorn in shirts and popcorn littering the grassy ground. Quite a bit of the popcorn didn’t make it to the snow fight either!
If you like this activity, you’ll love making a maze with sticks!
We even made popcorn snow angels too.
It may not have only been popcorn snow, but it was a perfect replacement and so much fun.
One day my children and I will get to experience real snow and see beautiful snow covered scenery and do all those wonderful activities we see children doing with snow on Instagram. But, until then, creating fake snow using popcorn is a perfectly fun alternative!
