DIY Nature Snow Globe

I had no idea my Nature Snow Globe would go viral on Tiktok.

Of course, I thought most people would think it beautiful and I was certain children would love shaking it around but I was thrilled to see so many of you fall in love with this fun nature craft too. 

The beauty of the nature snow globe is how simple it, how beautiful it becomes and that you most likely have all the items in your home.

What you need to make the Nature Snow Globe

1. A recycled jar. Any jar is fine, as long at it doesn’t leak with water in it.  I’d suggesting using a plastic see-through container for young children. 
2. Water. Yup, just regular water. 
3. A hole punch. You can use a regular circle punch but I’m a little addicted to the shaped hole punches. I used a butterfly punch. There are heaps that you can choose from like all the ones in this pack. 
4. Pretty leaves.

How to make your Nature Snow Globe 

Okay let’s jump into the  steps.

1. Collect a heap of beautiful leaves with your little ones. Use flat, lightly waxy leaved. The brighter the better. 
2. Hole punch your leaves. 
3. Place the jar upside down with the lid off an add your leaf cuttings to the jar. 
4. Fill the jar full of water but leave about .5 cm gap from the top. 
5. Put the lid on tightly. 
6. If you have very little ones. I’s suggest adding some stick tape around the join too.
7. Now shake it up. Before you leave though, I do recommend keeping it for a week or two. The snow globe works better in a few days. It’s quite hard to get the shapes moving at the start but a few days in and it starts to flow better, just like a real snow globe does. This is just another opportunity to teach your children that things change over time. 
8. When you’re finished with it. Tip it out and make another one. 

But won’t the nature snow globe go moldy?

Yes, yes it will.

Mine took two weeks to go moldy though, and i am totally okay with that.  I don’t want my nature crafts to last forever.

Your kids will be over the activity in a few days anyway. Simply tip it out and use your jar for something else, or make another one with a different hole punch shape and reengage your kids all over again. 

I teach my kids reciprocity. We use it and then we give it back to the earth. I’m not sure why everyone is so obsessed with everything having to last forever!

Hopefully most people take away that it’s okay for  nature crafts to have an expiry date, it’s awesome actually. You’re being more sustainable with your crafts and you can teach your children this lesson too.
