This flower petal activity — perfect for spring — encourages your child to make gorgeous potions with the flower petals that you find in your yard. This is a winner for keeping the kids occupied all afternoon. They’ll love using pipettes to mix colours and add pretty petals to their potions.
This flower petal activity builds:
- Colour recognition
- Fine motor skills
- Hand eye coordination
- Nature appreciation
- And much more
Petal potion materials
- Pipettes & or eye droppers
- Fairy bottles
- Test tubes
- Assorted containers
- Food colouring (red, blue & green)
- Flower petals
All the equipment is optional. You could find most of the materials in your cupboard. I would suggest getting pipettes though, my girls just LOVED playing with pipettes!
Make flower petal potions
Place all the materials for this flower petal activity on the table. Be sure to spread them out so that children can see all the materials available to them.
If you’re using glass jars and bottles like we did, I’d suggest you do a quick safety talk to remind your children that glass can break, to be careful and what they should do if glass does accidentally get broken.
Now the play is entirely up to your child. I’d suggest stepping back and just watching them play with the materials at first. Then, if you’re willing, join in and make some petal potions along side them. You’ll have fun too!
If you’re playing with your kids, it’s a great way to model different mixing processes and teach them about primary colours.
Check out how much fun my kids had with this flower petal activity!
So, what are you waiting for? Take your kids outside and collect loads of colourful petals. You won’t regret that little bit of effort because they will be mesmerized with this flower petal activity for the entire afternoon!
