This flower petal activity — perfect for spring —  encourages your child to make gorgeous potions with the flower petals that you find in your garden.

• Test tubes
• Assorted containers
• Food colouring (red, blue & green)

All the equipment is optional. I would suggest getting pipettes though, my girls just loved playing with pipettes!

Place all the materials for this flower petal activity on the table. Be sure to spread them out so that children can see all the materials available to them.

If you’re using glass jars and bottles, I’d suggest you do a quick safety talk to remind your children:

• that glass can break
• what they should do if glass does accidentally get broken

Of course, it would be much safer to use the plastic containers you already have in the kitchen, especially for littel ones.

Now the play is entirely up to your child. I’d suggest stepping back and just watching them play with the materials at first. Then, if you’re willing, join in and make some petal potions along side them. You’ll have fun too!

If you’re playing with your kids, it’s a great way to model different mixing processes and teach them about primary  and secondary colours.
