That time came yesterday when we sorted the animal pictures into their different habitats. We’ve sorted animals into birds, mammals and reptiles before but I wanted an activity that would challenge Miss Possum further this time and this one did.
Firstly, I explained the different types of places that animals live:
Arboreal – live in trees
Terrestrial – live on the land
Aquatic – live in the water
I added a flipping tree, land and water section to help remind her where the animals live. Then, I gave Miss Possum some glue. She knew exactly what to do. She glued.
‘Bat – trees, elephant – land, octopus – water…’
Of course, I had to add some harder animals in to the activity and then question her choices to see if she was confident with her answer.
‘Are you sure the Emu is not arboreal?’
‘Because it can’t fly’.
Adding a picture of a penguin got her thinking too. Miss Possum decided she’d place the penguin in between the land and water, which I thought was quite a smart idea.
The end result was a little flip book which proudly sits on our book shelf. Miss Possum refers back to it quite regularly and I laugh at the thought of her telling the teacher ‘ a bat is arboreal’ later down the track.
I know this booklet won’t last long though. Despite trying very hard to encourage Miss Panda and Platypus to take care of their books, this one will probably end up ripped too. We can recycle it again though. We’ll cut those animals pictures out and start a new activity with them!
